Grandpa Spread the Quilt Squares. Pepper Claimed the Whole Pile
Walt's needle slides in and out of a quilt made from faded blue florals and soft plaid squares, and Pepper has found the most comfortable spot in the house, right on top of the unfinished work. He sleeps with his nose tucked into a blue bundle of cloth and his curly gray eyebrows relaxed. The sewing table is crowded with a wicker basket of scraps, a mug, scissors in a jar, and neatly folded stacks of fabric.
Dogs are drawn to soft piles that smell like their person, and a sewing room is full of them. A Miniature Schnauzer is a compact dog that likes company, and many are happiest when they are close to the family during quiet activities. For safety, keep pins, needles, and loose thread away from sleepy dogs, since thread and needles can be harmful if swallowed, and call your vet immediately if that ever happens. Wiry schnauzer coats shed less than many breeds, which is good news for fabric, but a quick lint roller pass over finished pieces never hurts. A washable blanket near your chair can give your dog a cozy spot of his own.
Pepper will not be moved anytime soon. The quilt will get done eventually, and when it does, it will carry a little bit of dog in its memory. Quilts are made of small moments stitched together, and this one has plenty.
