Grandpa Filled the Tub in the Yard. Pepper Gave Him a Look
Soapy water drips from Pepper's beard as Walt scrubs him gently with a yellow sponge. The little schnauzer stands patiently in a big metal tub, ears slicked flat and eyes turned toward his groomer, who is smiling down with obvious fondness. Behind them, flower pots, a coiled hose, and a weathered fence frame a messy, comfortable backyard. The lather looks as thick as a bubble bath and Pepper wears the look of a dog who just wants this over with.
A Miniature Schnauzer's wiry coat and soft undercoat need regular care, and many are professionally groomed every several weeks to keep the coat neat. Their beards can collect food and water, so a quick wipe after meals helps. When bathing at home, use lukewarm water and a shampoo made for dogs, keep soap out of eyes and ears, and rinse completely, because leftover shampoo can irritate skin. Towel dry well, then brush so the coat does not tangle. Schnauzers can be prone to skin sensitivities, so if your dog is scratching a lot or has red patches, ask your vet. Short, calm baths with praise help dogs learn that tub time is nothing to worry about.
Pepper will probably shake himself dry in a big spray the moment he hops out, but Walt looks ready for it. Some bath days end up as a shared adventure, and this seems like one of them.
