Grandpa Dipped His Feet in the Lake. The Cat Waded Right Up Beside Him

AI imagemaine coonlake docksummer

Harold sits at the end of the wooden dock with his khaki shorts and bare feet dangling in the cool lake, laughing softly at his companion. Smoky sits in the shallow water at the edge, her silver striped fur damp at the tips and her long tail floating behind her. She looks up at him with bright green eyes, entirely at ease. Reeds line the shore beyond them and the lake shines in the clear daylight.

Maine Coons are often called the cats that like water, and some of them really do enjoy dipping paws, patting at ripples, or sitting in shallows. Their thick, water-shedding coat helps them handle a splash better than many breeds. Still, lakes bring a few risks. Natural water can hold bacteria and algae that are not safe to drink, so bring fresh water for her. Keep an eye out for slippery boards on the dock, hooks and fishing line, and deep water, and keep her on a harness and leash if you are not sure she will stay close. After a dip, dry her coat thoroughly and brush out any tangles, since a thick wet coat can mat quickly. Ask your vet about outdoor safety.

The water is calm and so are they. It seems like a perfect afternoon to sit at the edge of the lake and let the day drift by.
