Grandpa Rocked on the Porch. The Silver Cat Slept at His Feet

The porch floor is worn smooth and Smoky lies stretched out on it with her eyes closed, paws curled in and her thick tail trailing behind. Above her, Harold sits in a wooden rocking chair with a plaid shirt and a calm, drowsy face, looking down toward her. The chair runners and the slats of the porch are close to her whiskers and she is not bothered at all. A basket of towels, a pair of shoes, a bag, and plants sit along the wall in the shade.

Cats often choose a sleeping spot close to their person, and the foot of a chair is an easy place to feel safe. A porch can be a lovely spot for a cat, but a rocking chair deserves some care, since runners can pinch a tail or paw. Keep an eye out when the chair starts to move, and give your cat plenty of space. Maine Coons have long, heavy fur and are happy in cooler spots, but they should always have shade and fresh water on warm days. A soft mat on the boards makes her nap more comfortable. If you notice that your cat seems stiff or reluctant to move around, ask your vet about joint comfort.

The chair creaks gently and the afternoon carries on. A cat asleep by a favorite chair is one of the oldest peaceful pictures there is, and this one is a very good version.
