Pearl Ran Out of Steam So Grandpa Carried Her Up the Steps

AI imagepoodleporch stepslong walk

The long walk is over, and Pearl is carried the last few steps to the porch in Grandpa's arms. Her legs dangle, her curly coat is a little rumpled, and her dark eyes look calm and a touch sleepy. Grandpa holds her snug against his green cardigan, glasses low on his nose, and a gentle, proud look on his face. A porch lamp glows warm behind them, and boots, a watering can, and fallen leaves line the steps beneath. The day has plainly been a full one, and the evening air is soft and cool.

Even energetic dogs sometimes tire out after a big outing, and it is helpful to know your dog's limits. Watch for slowing down, heavy panting, or sitting down mid-walk, since those are signs she needs a break. Offer water, let her rest, and check her paws for anything stuck or sore. For small and medium dogs, carrying them up steps is fine if you hold them securely, and talk to your vet if your dog seems unusually tired or reluctant to walk.

Pearl does not look embarrassed in the least. She knows when a ride is on offer, and she accepts it with grace. Soon there will be a drink of water, a soft bed, and a long snooze to follow. Being carried home is one of life's quiet pleasures.
