Grandpa Wandered the Pumpkin Patch With Pearl Trotting Along

Pumpkins of every size dot the field, and Grandpa strolls between them with his hands loose at his sides and a calm, happy smile. His olive cardigan, dark jeans, and sturdy shoes are perfect for an October walk. Pearl the white Poodle trots right beside him, her mouth open in a pant and a brown collar around her neck. Fallen leaves crunch under their feet, and a fence and a few garden tools sit at the far edge of the patch. The air looks crisp and the evening light stretches long shadows between the vines.

Pumpkin season can be fun for pets, with a few cautions. Plain, cooked pumpkin is often used in small amounts as a dog-friendly treat, but raw stems, carved pumpkins, and anything with candles or seasoning should be kept away. Always supervise your dog around fields, since farm tools, fertilizers, and sharp vines can cause trouble. Check with your vet before adding new foods, and make sure your dog stays hydrated on warm fall days. Small dogs and curly coats can pick up burrs and bits of vine, so a quick brush afterward helps.

Pearl is not hunting for the biggest pumpkin. She is happy just to be walking beside Grandpa while the light turns gold. For both of them, an autumn walk is its own kind of harvest. Grandpa may well choose a pumpkin for the porch before they leave.
