Grandpa Played the Old Piano and Pearl Took the Seat Beside Him
Grandpa's fingers move across the keys of an old wooden upright piano, and his gray beard and glasses catch the window light as he watches his hands. Sheet music and brass candle holders sit near the top of the instrument. Beside him on the little bench, Pearl the white Poodle sits upright and alert, her curls fluffed and her ears pricked. She gazes ahead as if she were waiting for her cue to join the chorus. Mugs, books, and framed photos fill the shelves behind them.
Many dogs react to music, and some will even howl or sing along when a certain pitch catches their ear. That is generally harmless, and it can be a sweet, funny part of the day. Keep the volume moderate, since dogs hear well and loud sounds can be stressful, and make sure your dog has an easy way to leave the room if she wants quiet. Poodles are often quick to learn routines, so a regular piano hour can become a favorite ritual.
Whatever is playing, Pearl approves. She has taken the best seat in the house, and she is not about to give it up. The audience is small but very devoted.
A song does not need an audience of hundreds to be worth playing. One devoted Poodle, a warm room, and a familiar melody are plenty for a lovely afternoon.
