Grandpa and Pearl Drifted Off on the Grass Side by Side
The backyard is quiet, the fence is bright with afternoon sun, and Grandpa lies on the grass with his eyes closed and his cheek resting on his folded arm. His green cardigan blends with the lawn. Beside him, Pearl the white Poodle lies stretched out with her chin on the ground, her paws tucked in and her curls stirred by the breeze. Both are completely at peace, as though the whole world had paused for a moment.
Dogs sleep much more than people, often a dozen hours or more a day, and they love a warm, safe place to snooze. A sunny patch of lawn is a favorite, but on hot days it is best to make sure there is shade and fresh water nearby, since dogs can overheat. Grass can also hide fleas or ticks, so check your dog after outdoor naps and talk to your vet about prevention. Napping next to a favorite person is one of a dog's greatest pleasures.
Neither of them seems in any hurry to wake up. The afternoon stretches out, and the grass is soft. Sometimes the best plan for a Saturday is no plan at all.
A little rest in the sun is one of life's simple gifts, especially when it is shared with a friend who never snores too loudly or too long.
