Grandpa Fell Asleep Mid-Show. Pearl Took Over the Watch.

The television is dark, the tissue box is within reach, and Grandpa has settled so deep into his recliner that his glasses have slipped a little down his nose. His chunky tan cardigan rises and falls with each slow breath. Perched on the armrest beside him is Pearl, a fluffy white Poodle with dark, alert eyes, one paw resting on his sleeve as if to make sure he stays put. Afternoon light slants through the blinds onto a coffee cup, a pile of folded blankets, and a basket of odds and ends.

Poodles are famously tuned in to their people. They are intelligent, eager to please, and happiest when they can be close to the person they love, which is why a Poodle will so often choose an armrest or a lap over a bed of its own. Many Poodles also pick up on daily routines quickly, so a dog like Pearl probably knows exactly when the afternoon nap hour arrives. Their curly coats need regular brushing and trims to prevent mats, so a calm companion who enjoys being handled makes the grooming routine much easier.

Pearl does not seem worried about the show she is missing. Her job right now is simple: sit tall, stay close, and keep one eye on the room while Grandpa rests. When he wakes, the program will still be there, and so will she.
