Grandma and Penny Rested on the Boardwalk as the Sun Went Down
Grandma sits on a weathered bench along a beach boardwalk in the warm evening light, her yellow cardigan bright against the wood. Her glasses are on and she gazes tenderly down at Penny the Yorkshire Terrier, who sits in her lap with her tongue peeking out and her ears perked. A canvas tote, a bag of snacks, and a pair of flip-flops lie on the bench beside them, and the sandy beach and ocean stretch out in the distance. Little shells are scattered on the boards. Gulls wheel somewhere in the distance and the boards are warm underfoot.
A beach day can be lovely for small dogs, but it needs some planning. Hot sand can burn paws, so check the surface with your hand, and bring fresh water since salt water can make a dog sick. Yorkies have fine, silky coats and can get cold or overheated easily, so bring a towel and look for shade. Rinse her off after the beach to remove salt and sand, and check local rules about dogs on beaches and boardwalks.
Penny seems perfectly content to watch the world go by from Grandma's lap. The sea breeze is gentle, and the sky is soft. It is the ideal end to a long day. Penny will probably doze off before the sun is down.
A bench, a breeze, and a friend are plenty.
