Grandma Tossed the Tennis Ball and Penny Launched Into the Air
Grandma has just tossed a bright yellow tennis ball and she is laughing as she follows its arc, her short silver hair neat and her soft gray cardigan loose. Penny the Yorkshire Terrier is caught mid-leap, front paws tucked and ears flying, her blue and tan coat bright against the grass. The yard around them is cheerful and lived-in, with a wooden fence, a watering can, a few potted plants, and a pair of lawn chairs waiting nearby. Fallen leaves dot the lawn, and the whole yard looks inviting.
Fetch is a great way to burn off energy, and small dogs like Yorkies often love chasing a ball. Keep the ball small enough for her mouth but too large to swallow, and choose soft ground for jumping to protect her joints. Short sessions with water breaks are best, especially on warm days. Yorkies can be fearless, so supervise them in open yards, and your vet can advise on the right amount of exercise for her age and size. Always offer fresh water after play, and let her rest.
Penny has no idea how impressive her jump is. Grandma cheers, and the ball bounces. The game could easily go on for another hour. She will probably bring the ball back for another round.
A tennis ball may be the best toy ever invented.
