Grandpa Stretches on the Mat While Pip Copies His Pose
Grandpa sits on a gray mat in the middle of his living room, one leg extended and a hand reaching toward his toes, a wide smile on his face. Pip lies in the corner of the mat, front paws forward, copying his posture as if she signed up for the class. A tennis ball, a knitted rug, and a basket of blankets complete the cozy corner.
Sunlight pours across the hardwood, and a water bottle and glasses sit within reach. The scene looks relaxed and unhurried, the kind of start to the day that takes no equipment and no hurry.
Gentle stretching can be a nice routine for many older adults, and it helps to talk to your doctor before starting anything new. Dogs often love joining in, since they stretch naturally, including the familiar downward-dog pose. If your dog likes to share the mat, keep a non-slip surface so she does not slide, and let her wander off if she wants to. A short daily walk also benefits small dogs, who still need exercise even if they are tiny. If you see her limping or stiff after play, ask your vet.
Neither of them is in a rush, and the day has barely begun. A little wag at the end of each stretch seems to say that she approves of the whole program.
