Grandpa's Morning Coffee Had One Very Loyal Audience
Grandpa sits on the weathered back steps with a white mug in his hands, grinning down at Pip, who sits close and gazes up with bright eyes. His red-and-blue plaid flannel looks cozy, and a flowerpot, an iron railing, and a wooden deck frame the corner of the yard. The morning is quiet, and neither of them has anywhere else to be.
Pip's coat looks freshly brushed, silky tan around the face and steel blue on the back, and her ears are alert. Grandpa's expression says he has said good morning to her about a thousand times and still means it.
Small dogs like Yorkies often form deep bonds with one person and love sharing a daily ritual. Setting up a predictable morning routine, with a short walk, breakfast, and a little attention, helps them feel secure. Keep hot drinks well away from small dogs, since a spill can burn and caffeine is unsafe for pets. Steps can also be tricky for tiny legs, so a non-slip mat and a careful eye are wise. If your dog suddenly seems clingy or anxious, mention it to your vet.
Some friendships are built one morning at a time, and this one has plenty of mornings left. The coffee will cool and the sun will climb, and she will still be sitting right there.
