Grandpa Fed the Chickens While Pebble Followed Along
Grandpa stands in the middle of the yard in a cream cardigan, scattering golden feed across the ground as hens gather around his sandals. Pebble follows a few steps behind, her round face turned toward the flock and her golden eyes alert. A black hen, a brown hen, and a white hen peck eagerly while an open door and a few garden tools stand behind them.
Terracotta pots of herbs line the doorway, and a blue tote bag hangs on the door. The yard has the cheerful chaos of a morning chore, with feathers, feed, and a very interested cat.
Cats and chickens can share a yard, but it takes supervision. Many cats will stalk birds, and chickens can peck or scratch a curious cat, so keep her at a safe distance. Chicken feed and droppings can carry germs, so wash your hands, and keep her away from the feed itself. A chicken coop should be secure from other predators as well. A harness and leash help an indoor cat enjoy the outdoors safely. Ask your vet about parasite prevention and vaccines before outdoor trips.
The hens will get their breakfast, and Pebble will get her walk. A chore is nicer when you have company. Afterward there will be fresh eggs to collect and a quiet cat to carry in, and the yard will settle back into its quiet routine.
