A Little Kitchen Dance with Otis and Pepper Right at His Heels
Sunlight spills across the countertops as Otis moves through the kitchen with a lifted hand and a loose, easy step, as though a favorite song is playing somewhere in his head. Pepper trots along at his heels, her tail curled high and her face turned up in cheerful expectation. Wooden cabinets, a drying rack, a canvas bag of groceries, and a little pile of apples add warmth and clutter to the room, and everything looks pleasantly lived in.
Kitchens are a favorite room for dogs, because food smells make them hopeful and alert. It is smart to watch your footing when a small dog is underfoot, since a Shih Tzu is low to the ground and easy to trip over, so teaching her a spot to wait, like a mat in the corner, can help everyone stay safe. Keep groceries and dropped food out of reach, because onions, grapes, raisins, and chocolate can be harmful to dogs. If your dog eats something you are unsure about, call your vet right away.
Otis doesn't seem to mind the little shadow at his heels. Pepper is thrilled to be part of whatever is happening, and the room feels bright and full of life. It is a small, ordinary kitchen moment, and a very happy one. It is hard to resist a house with this much quiet music in it.
