Otis Walked the Pumpkin Patch and Pepper Sniffed Every Row
Otis walks slowly through the pumpkin patch with a loop of leash in his hand, his tan cardigan warm against the cool air. Pepper trots behind him, her scruffy head tilted and her eyes on the orange pumpkins scattered across the dirt. Vines curl across the ground, a wooden fence frames the patch, and the leaves have started to turn, so the whole place feels like early fall. A faint haze hangs over the far end of the patch, and a few wheelbarrow tracks cross the soil, which tells you it has been a busy season.
A leash is a good idea in a pumpkin patch, since there are plenty of tempting smells and things to nibble. Small amounts of plain pumpkin can be fine for dogs, but a rotting or moldy one can upset a stomach, and the stems and vines can be rough on tiny mouths. Watch out for uneven ground and sharp stalks too, especially for a short-legged breed like the Shih Tzu. Check her paws afterward, and ask your vet before adding pumpkin to her diet.
Pepper is keeping pace and taking in every smell. Otis hasn't picked a pumpkin yet, and no one seems to mind. It is a wonderfully unhurried way to enjoy a fall afternoon. They have the whole afternoon to choose, and Pepper seems to approve of the pace.
