A Silver Maine Coon Fell Asleep in the Porch Hammock. He Had Company.
The rope hammock sags gently under its cargo: one very large, very sleepy cat and a scattering of yellow fluff. A silver tabby Maine Coon has stretched out across the woven netting, eyes shut tight, his thick, striped coat and enormous plumed tail spilling over the edge. About ten ducklings have joined him, some cuddled against his ruff, a couple perched near his head, and a pair farther up the hammock enjoying their own private corner. Beyond the porch railing, the backyard is green and quiet, with hostas and shrubs basking in soft daylight.
Maine Coons are one of the largest domestic cat breeds and are often nicknamed gentle giants for their friendly, easygoing nature. They're known for their tufted ears, shaggy water-resistant coats, and bushy tails, which historically helped them handle harsh New England winters. Many Maine Coons are sociable and get along with children and other pets, and some even enjoy playing with water. Their long coats benefit from regular brushing to prevent tangles, especially around the belly and hindquarters. Because of their size, they also appreciate sturdy cat trees and roomy beds, or, apparently, a well-anchored hammock.
There's an easy, summery peace to this moment. The hammock rocks a little in the breeze, the big cat snores softly, and his tiny companions have decided that this is the best nap spot on the whole porch.
