A Harlequin Great Dane Walked the Fence Line With a Friend Who Fits Under His Chin
Next to this lamb, the harlequin Great Dane looks like a spotted skyscraper. The enormous dog, white with ragged black patches and soft droopy ears, is walking along a weathered wooden fence and gazing down with a gentle, slightly worried expression, as if making sure his tiny companion is keeping pace. The lamb, small enough to walk right under the Dane's chin, steps forward calmly with its ears perked. Behind them, a green watering can, potted flowers, and a garden hose sit near the house, and the grass is scattered with fallen leaves.
Harlequin is one of the classic Great Dane coat patterns, a white base with torn-looking black patches, and it is one of the most eye-catching looks in the dog world. Like other giant, deep-chested breeds, Great Danes are considered at higher risk for bloat, a serious condition in which the stomach fills with gas and can twist. Owners are often advised to feed smaller meals spread through the day and to avoid vigorous exercise right before and after eating. Restlessness, a swollen belly, or unproductive retching are emergencies, so call your vet right away if you ever notice them.
None of that worry belongs in this calm, slow walk, though. The Dane is moving with care, the lamb is moving with confidence, and the fence line stretches out ahead of them like an easy afternoon route. Big or small, it is nice to have someone who matches your pace.
