Two Neighbors Took the Porch Steps and Stared Off Together
Two neighbors have claimed the porch step for the afternoon. The Dalmatian sits tall with his spotted chest forward and one floppy, black-patched ear drooping, while a creamy Birman with a dark face and blue eyes tucks her white-gloved paws neatly beneath her fluffy bulk. Both are gazing the same way, as if something interesting just rolled past the yard. Behind them a screen door and a weathered wall suggest an ordinary, quiet afternoon.
We can call them Domino and Biscuit. Domino's coat is crisp white scattered with inky spots, and every one of them is a different size. Biscuit's dark mask, ears and tail contrast with her pale body, which is the classic look of a seal point.
Dalmatians are athletic, energetic dogs that were bred to run alongside carriages, so they usually need a good deal of daily exercise and do best with a job or a long walk. They tend to be loyal and sensitive, and early socialization helps them get along with other pets. Birmans, by contrast, are known for being gentle, social cats who like company without being demanding. When a high-energy dog and a mellow cat share a home, a calm routine, separate resting spots and plenty of patience usually make the friendship easier. A porch step is a nice neutral place to let that friendship grow.
Whatever they are watching, they are watching it together, and that seems to be all either of them needs.
