A Corgi and a White Cat Found the Only Sunbeam on the Floor
A single beam of afternoon sun has landed on the wooden floor, and two sleepers have found it. A red-and-white Corgi lies with his chin on the boards and his eyes shut, big ears relaxed. Right next to him a snowy white cat has pressed her cheek against his and closed her own eyes, whiskers fanned. Beyond them, boxes, baskets and a dim lamp make the room look like a well-loved home.
We might call the dog Nugget and the cat Pearl. They seem to have gone to sleep at nearly the same moment, and the sunlight is spread evenly across both, as if the room had made a place for them.
Corgis were originally bred to herd cattle, and they remain smart, energetic and sometimes bossy dogs that may nip at heels. They enjoy training and games, but their long backs mean they should not jump from high places too often, and they can gain weight easily. Cats love sunbeams because they enjoy warm spots, and a sunny patch is a safe, happy way to nap. If your pets bask by a window, make sure there is fresh water nearby, and be careful about hot afternoons when direct sun through glass can become uncomfortable. White cats with pink ears can sunburn, so ask your vet about protection.
Nugget and Pearl are doing just what the sunbeam asked: nothing at all.
