A Basset Puppy and a Pony Followed the Same Smell in the Garden
Nose down and ears dragging, a tricolor Basset Hound puppy snuffles along the edge of a raised bed among carrot tops and lettuce leaves, while a shaggy tan pony leans in from the top of the frame to sniff the same spot. Both are searching with serious expressions. Rows of kale and cabbage run behind them, and garden tools lean against a wooden fence in the sunny backyard.
We could call the pony Clover and the puppy Waffle. Waffle's huge, velvety ears nearly touch the soil, and Clover's pale forelock hangs over her eyes. Together they look like a pair of tiny, hungry garden inspectors.
Basset Hounds have one of the best noses in the dog world and were bred to track scent trails, so a garden is an exciting place for a puppy. Their long ears need regular cleaning and their low bodies need protection from jumping off high places. Ponies enjoy munching on greens, but many garden plants are not safe for them, including nightshades like tomato leaves and certain bulbs. If you want your pony and puppy to explore together, keep them away from fertilizer, mulch and pest sprays, and watch what they nibble. Ask your vet or an equine professional for a list of safe plants.
Waffle and Clover are happy detectives, and the vegetables are lucky that they are only looking.
