A Weimaraner Puppy Trotted Along the Fence With a Pony at His Heels
A silver-gray Weimaraner puppy bounds along a wooden fence line with his tongue out and his ears flapping, while a shaggy cream pony trots right behind him. The grass is worn and patchy from many walks, and a barrel, a pile of firewood and a line of laundry are scattered across the yard behind.
We might call the pony Clover and the puppy Slate. Slate's gray coat and amber eyes give him an almost ghostly look, and he moves with all the enthusiasm of a puppy who has just discovered the world. Clover trots after him calmly, as if she is humoring a younger friend.
Weimaraners are athletic, sleek dogs that were bred for hunting, and they need a great deal of exercise and companionship. Puppies are very energetic, often called velcro dogs because they like to stay close to their people, and they can become bored or anxious if left alone for too long. Early training and plenty of safe play are important. Fences are a good way to keep both puppies and ponies safe, but check them regularly for loose boards, nails and gaps. If a puppy chases a pony, step in calmly to stop it, since ponies may kick when startled.
Slate and Clover are enjoying a lively walk, and the fence is lucky to follow along.
