A Tiny Chihuahua Leaned In to Meet Even Tinier Kittens

AI imagechihuahuakittensfirst meeting

A chocolate-brown Chihuahua leans down with ears flopped to the side and nose almost touching a litter of kittens. Four of them look up from the cloth: gray, black and white, cream and a ginger one peeking from the back. A turquoise collar shows at the dog's neck, and a metal bowl, a plush toy and a basket of laundry sit nearby.

We might call the Chihuahua Taco. He is one of the smallest dogs there is, yet next to the kittens he looks like a gentle giant. His nose twitches as he takes in each new scent, and the kittens lift their tiny faces back at him.

Nose-to-nose sniffing is how animals say hello, and a first meeting between a dog and kittens works best when it is calm and slow. Keep the dog on a leash or in a sit, let the kittens approach if they want, and reward calm behavior. Chihuahuas are small, alert dogs with big personalities, and many are protective of their people. They get cold easily, so a blanket is helpful. Because kittens are so fragile and dogs of any size can hurt them by accident, supervise all contact, and ask your vet about vaccines and parasite checks before introductions.

Taco takes it all very seriously, and the kittens seem to be approving of the greeting.
