A Dachshund Kept Watch Over Kittens Sleeping in a Wicker Basket
A black-and-tan Dachshund leans over the rim of a wicker basket with his long ears hanging and his dark eyes soft. Inside, on a cream knit blanket, a litter of kittens is sound asleep: ginger, gray, black and cream, tangled into one warm bundle. A baby cup, scattered toys and a soft light from the window show a home that is lived in. The soft glow shows every whisker and every tiny paw.
We can call the Dachshund Frankie. He keeps his nose near the basket as though checking that each kitten is still there, and his eyes stay on them. It is a sweet, careful kind of watching. It is a small gesture that says a great deal.
Dachshunds are alert, brave dogs that tend to be loyal and protective of their families. They have long backs, so care with jumping and stairs is a good idea. A basket lined with a soft blanket makes a good cozy bed for kittens, but check that the basket is sturdy, that the blanket has no loose threads and that nobody can get trapped. Keep the nest in a quiet spot and wash bedding often. Kittens sleep most of the day, and a calm home helps them grow. Ask your vet about their care.
Frankie keeps his post, and the kittens sleep soundly. It is a peaceful, tender moment in a busy home.
