A Bernese Mountain Dog Rested His Chin Beside Kittens in a Sunny Window
A tricolor Bernese Mountain Dog rests his chin on a white windowsill, his brown eyes soft and his nose near a pile of kittens. They are curled in the afternoon sun, ginger, gray tabby, calico and black, all in a cluster. A bright window shows trees outside, and a cluttered shelf with pencils, a plant and a gray blanket sits to the left. Dust motes float in the light above them.
We can call the Bernese Bruin. He is so big that he has to lower his head to fit in the picture, yet he looks completely at ease. The kittens soak up the sun, and he soaks up the sight. They look like old friends.
Bernese Mountain Dogs are gentle, patient and affectionate dogs from Switzerland, bred as farm dogs. They love being with their families, but they have thick coats and do not do well in the heat. They need regular brushing and moderate exercise. Windowsills are favorite spots for cats because of the warmth, the light and the view, but be sure windows and screens are secure, especially for tiny kittens who can slip through gaps. A soft blanket makes the sill more comfortable, and your vet can help you decide when kittens are old enough to explore.
Bruin and the kittens have found the sunniest seat in the house, and they plan to stay.
