Two Friends Found the Warmest Board on the Deck

The deck boards are warm, the leaves are throwing speckled shadows, and two friends have found the one perfect patch of sun. A tricolor Corgi lies flat with his chin on the planks, brown and white face turned toward the sun, eyes half closed. Right beside him, nose to nose almost, a pink piglet stretches out with her snout resting on the wood and her ear tipped forward. The garden behind them is soft and green, and not a thing is moving.

Corgis were bred to herd cattle on farms, so a yard with livestock is a natural fit for them. They are smart, lively, and quick to bond, though their herding instinct can show up as nipping at heels, so early training helps a lot when they meet other animals. Pigs enjoy sunbathing just as much as dogs do, but their skin is sensitive, and pale pigs can sunburn, so shade nearby is important. Fresh water should always be within reach for both animals. If you are planning to keep a pet pig, a vet who knows pigs is a very good first call.

Let's call this little pink napper Pearl. She has figured out that the Corgi is an excellent windbreak, and he has figured out that having a piglet around is much better than being alone with the afternoon. Sunlight shifts a few inches along the floor and they both shift with it, never opening their eyes for more than a moment.
