A Yorkie and a Piglet Weren't Ready to Leave the Quilt

AI imageyorkshire terrierpigletquilt

Morning has arrived, though nobody under the quilt is in any rush. A blue and tan Yorkshire Terrier peeks out from a rumpled patchwork blanket, his chin on the fabric and his bright eyes just beginning to focus. Next to him, a pink piglet is still half asleep, her snout resting on the quilt and her ear folded. Sunlight through a curtained window lights the room, where a laundry basket, a remote control, and a little toy pig sit on the floor.

Small dogs like Yorkies love burrowing under blankets, a habit that goes back to their den-living ancestors. Dogs feel safe in snug spaces, and a quilt makes a perfect cave. Piglets burrow too, and they often make nests of bedding to stay warm. Make sure a blanket is breathable and that neither animal gets trapped or overheated beneath it, and keep stitches and loose threads in good repair so no one swallows a piece. For any questions about bedding or sleep, your vet is the best source of advice.

We will call the little pig Pearl. She stretches, pushes her snout out of the quilt, and gives a small morning grunt. The Yorkie yawns in reply. Neither one is ready to get up yet, so they stay put for a few more minutes. Sunbeams shift on the floor, and the quilt keeps them warm. The day can start whenever they say so.
