A Chihuahua and an Orange Tabby Went Inspecting the Vegetable Patch

The vegetable garden is a little wild this year, and two small inspectors have come to check on it. A fawn Chihuahua stands on the left with his big ears turned out and his nose lifted toward the leaves. Beside him, an orange tabby leans forward with his whiskers spread, sniffing the plants with great seriousness. A leafy basil plant sits at the front of the picture, and a terra cotta pot lies tipped in the soil behind them.

Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breed, but they're known for a big personality. They can be confident, loyal, and surprisingly bold, and they often bond closely with one person. Because they're so small, they can get cold easily, and they should be supervised around larger animals and outdoor hazards.

Gardens can be full of things that tempt a curious pet. Basil is generally considered safe for cats and dogs, but other common plants are not. Tomato leaves and stems, onions, garlic, and many ornamental flowers can cause problems if eaten, and some fertilizers and pest products are harmful. If your pet has nibbled something unfamiliar, call your vet or a pet poison hotline.

For now, the two investigators are working side by side, the tiny dog and the thoughtful cat. Nobody is digging up the beans, at least not yet. It's a pleasant partnership, and it looks like they plan to examine every leaf before the day is over.
