A Hairless Cat Tried to Warm a Tortoise in a Snowy Yard

AI imagesphynxtortoisesnow

A thin layer of snow clings to the ground among the fallen leaves, and a pink hairless Sphynx cat has curled around Moss the tortoise's shell. Her big ears are tilted back, her eyes are narrowed in a serious expression and her wrinkled skin shows every fold. The tortoise lies low with his head drawn forward, his shell patterned in brown and gold. A clay pot, a wooden fence and a few dead leaves surround them.

This is a sweet picture, but cold and snow are not good for either animal. Sphynx cats have very little fur and get chilled quickly, and tortoises need warmth to stay healthy. Many species cannot tolerate freezing weather at all, so they should be kept inside during winter, with a proper heated enclosure. If you have a tortoise and live in a cold climate, ask your vet or a reptile specialist about the right setup for the season. Pets that spend time in cold weather should be dried and warmed up afterward, and kept indoors whenever possible.

In the picture, the cat is doing her best to share her warmth, and the tortoise is staying calm. It is a gentle image of friendship in a cold yard. They look as if they would be happy to head indoors, where a blanket is waiting. Soon enough, a warm blanket and a dry floor will win out, and the snow will be left to the leaves.
