A Black Cat and an Old Tortoise Watched the Pond Go Still

AI imageblack cattortoisepond

The backyard pond is still, with lily pads floating on its dark surface and tall reeds at the edge. A black cat sits on the bank with her yellow eyes turned to the water and her ears pricked. Next to her, Moss the tortoise stands with his neck stretched out, looking toward the same view. Their shells and fur are lit by soft evening light, and a wooden fence and a few garden plants frame the scene.

Many tortoises enjoy time outdoors in a safe, enclosed area, since sunlight and fresh air are good for them. They should be kept away from deep water, though, since most tortoises are not good swimmers and can drown in a pond. A raised, fenced garden spot with shade and a shallow water dish is a safer arrangement. Cats are naturally drawn to ponds because of the movement and the wildlife, but they, too, should be watched. If you are unsure how to set up a safe outdoor space, ask your vet or a reptile specialist.

For now, the two of them are simply enjoying the quiet. The cat watches the ripples, the tortoise watches the cat, and the evening settles around them. It is a peaceful way to end the day. A frog may croak somewhere in the reeds, but neither of them will bother to turn around and see.
