The Shiba Is Known for Keeping to Himself. Then Came the Rug Nap.

The red Shiba Inu has folded himself into a neat ring on a woven farmhouse rug, his fluffy tail wrapped around his hind legs and his eyes closed in bliss. Nestled right under his chin is Clover, the small brown rabbit, with her ears flattened and her body pressed against his chest. Behind them a wooden porch and some scattered leaves suggest the afternoon has been a long, gentle one.

Shiba Inus are small, fox-like dogs from Japan, known for being alert, clean and independent. They often keep to themselves and have a strong will, so patient, consistent training works best. A Shiba's thick double coat sheds heavily a couple of times a year, and regular brushing helps manage it. They can be wary of unfamiliar animals, so any introduction to a rabbit should be slow and watched carefully. It also helps to give each pet its own safe place to retreat. If you are bringing home a rabbit and have a Shiba, a vet or trainer can help plan it.

It is a lovely sight, partly because of how unexpected it is. Shibas have a reputation for being aloof, yet this one has curled up around a rabbit as if she were a favorite pillow. Clover has found her heater. The rug, the fur and the afternoon light all blend into a single warm color. There is nothing to do here but nap, and they are doing it very well.
