The Dachshund and Five Ducklings Stopped at the Pond and Looked Out
The red Dachshund stands at the muddy edge of the pond with his long nose lifted and one paw planted in the grass. Beside him, in a staggered line, five yellow ducklings are looking out across the water too, their bills lifted and their feet in the mud. Reeds, lily pads and a wooden fence reflect softly on the still green surface of the pond.
Dachshunds are curious, determined little dogs with a strong sense of smell, and a pond is full of interesting scents to them. They do not usually swim well because of their short legs and long bodies, so it is wise to supervise them near deep water. Ducklings, on the other hand, are drawn to water, but very young ones do not have waterproof feathers yet and can get cold or even drown without a mother to guide them. They need warmth and careful introduction to swimming. If you are raising ducklings, ask your vet when and how to introduce them to water.
They look like a small group of pilgrims who have reached the end of a long road. Nobody steps forward, and nobody steps back. The dog seems thoughtful, as if he is considering the depth. The ducklings wait quietly, their little fluffy rears glowing in the light. It is the moment before the next adventure, and for now they are all happy to stand together and simply look.
