The Chickens Put on a Show, and Two Friends Had Front-Row Seats
Behind the wire fence, a few chickens strut and scratch, and two spectators are paying close attention. A seal point Siamese with sky-blue eyes and a creamy chest sits upright, looking intently in the direction of the hens. Beside her is a golden lop-eared bunny with a fluffy mane of fur around her face, her ears relaxed but her little eyes fixed on the same scene. Baskets, towels and a glowing porch light can be seen in the background, and there are bits of hay and leaves scattered around their feet.
Chickens make a surprisingly fascinating show for pets, and many cats enjoy watching them the way people enjoy television. Keeping a good fence between them is wise, since chickens, cats and rabbits are all different species with different instincts. Poultry can carry bacteria like salmonella, so wash your hands after handling birds or their eggs, and keep pet food and water separate from the coop. If you have a bunny and chickens, avoid shared feed or bedding, because their dietary needs are different. A vet familiar with farm animals can guide you in setting up a safe space.
The two have the look of friends who have seen this show many times and still find it enjoyable. They sit shoulder to shoulder, quiet and attentive, as the hens go about their business.
