A Frenchie Found Shade Under the Apple Tree, and Company Followed
Apple leaves and a few fallen petals frame this shady corner of the yard. A cream-colored French Bulldog lies with his chin pressed into the grass and his bat ears upright, his dark eyes soft and a little sleepy. Right beside his nose, five yellow ducklings stand in a neat line, all facing the same way, as if they are posing for a class photo. In the background an old white door, a pair of rubber boots and a basket give the garden a lived-in look.
French Bulldogs are small, affectionate companions with a clownish streak, and many are happy to curl up with their people all day. Their short noses make them prone to overheating, so shade, water and rest are important on warm days, just like this apple tree is offering. A calm dog and gentle ducklings can share a yard, but they should always be supervised. Ducklings can be hurt by a nudge, and they need water, shelter and a spot that is safe from predators. Talk to your vet about caring for waterfowl, and about heat safety for flat-faced breeds.
This pair has found the perfect shady nook, with petals underfoot and no schedule at all. It is the kind of spring afternoon that seems to last forever, and nobody is in a hurry for it to end.
