A Big Rottweiler Became the Shade Tree for a Row of Ducklings

Dappled sunlight spills through the leaves of an old apple tree, and underneath it a big black and tan Rottweiler has settled down in the dirt. His chin is low, his eyes are calm, and right in front of his paws a neat row of fluffy yellow ducklings is resting, a few of them with their bills tucked into their feathers. The wooden fence behind them leans a little, as if it too is trying to relax.

Rottweilers have a reputation for looking serious, but many are goofy and devoted at home. They are strong, intelligent working dogs that thrive on training, structure and plenty of time with their family. Early, patient socialization matters a lot with any powerful breed, and that includes learning to be gentle around smaller animals. Calm adult dogs with good manners can be wonderful around other species, though any dog and small bird pairing should always be supervised.

Shade is also a real need for ducklings. Young birds overheat more easily than people expect, so a cool spot with water nearby is just as important as warmth on a chilly day. An apple tree is a lovely choice.

Whatever is going on behind that wise brown face, he seems perfectly content to be the neighborhood's tallest, darkest, most reliable umbrella. The ducklings certainly think so.
