Whose Bed Is It Now? The Shepherd Gave a Very Calm Answer
Nobody asked whose bed this was. A sable German Shepherd has curled onto a big shaggy cream cushion, and a line of yellow ducklings has lined itself up along the fluffy rim as if they have bought tickets. The shepherd keeps one ear tilted and looks straight at the viewer with dark, thoughtful eyes, while a stuffed toy and a basket of blankets wait quietly in the corner of the room. The room around them is pleasantly messy, the kind of lived-in clutter that tells you nobody here worries about perfect.
German Shepherds are famous for their intelligence and loyalty, and they are happiest when they have a job. That can look like herding, guarding, or simply keeping watch over a flock of small, noisy roommates. Because they bond so deeply with their people, they often take to a household's other animals with a protective streak. Still, a shepherd's size and energy mean introductions to small birds should be slow, calm and supervised.
The sable coat seen here, with dark-tipped hairs over a warm tan base, is one of several classic shepherd colorings. It gives the dog a wolfish look that never quite matches the soft heart underneath.
The plush bed looks plenty big enough for everyone, and the ducklings seem to agree. Some beds are for sleeping, and some are for being the best-guarded spot in the whole house.
