A Havanese Trotted Across the Yard With a Very Unusual Passenger

Somebody has found the world's most patient taxi. A black and white Havanese with a mop of shaggy fur trots across the backyard, tongue out and eyes bright, while a small chestnut horse perches on its back with its ears pricked and its tiny mane ruffling in the breeze. A garden hose, a watering can and a rope toy lie scattered around, and the porch lights are glowing in the background.

Havanese are cheerful companion dogs from Cuba, bred to be part of a household rather than to work a field. They are sociable, playful and quick to learn, and many love learning tricks. Their long, silky coat needs regular brushing to prevent tangles, and they usually do best when they have company, since being left alone for long stretches can make them restless.

Horses, on the other hand, are herd animals. They feel safest with friends nearby, and a calm companion of any species can help a horse feel settled. Many stables keep a goat, a donkey or even a dog as a buddy for just that reason. When a dog and a horse meet in real life, though, it should always happen slowly and with supervision, since a startled hoof can hurt a small dog.

For this little parade, the Havanese grins and the horse looks pleased. A good friend makes any ride smooth.
