The Corgi Finally Lay Down in the Hay and the Ducklings Joined Her

The hay is soft, the barn door is open and a red and white Corgi has dropped onto the straw for a well-earned nap. Her nose is pressed flat to the floor, her eyes are closing, and right beside her face, a row of ducklings is settling in against the golden stalks. A pair of boots stands by the door, and a basket sits in the corner, exactly where the farmer left it.

Corgis have a long history on British farms, where they nipped at the heels of cattle and kept the farmyard in order. That working heritage makes them smart, energetic and a little stubborn. They do best with daily exercise and a task, and without it they may start to herd the family or the furniture. Corgis also shed a lot, so a regular brush is part of life with one.

Hay and straw look alike, but they are different things. Hay is dried grass used for feed, while straw is the dry stalk left over after harvest and used for bedding. Straw makes a better soft, dry nest, though damp or moldy bedding should always be swapped for fresh.

The Corgi lets out a quiet sigh and the ducklings snuggle in. By the time the sun slips lower, everyone will be dreaming. A good nap is its own kind of farm work.
