A Jack Russell and a Chestnut Horse Stared at the Pond Together
Both of them are looking at something we cannot see. A white and tan Jack Russell Terrier sits upright in the foreground with his ears alert, and right behind him a tall chestnut horse stretches its head over his shoulder, nose pointed in the same direction. Beyond them, a small pond reflects the sky, and the reeds and woodpile show the quiet edge of a country yard. Dry reeds rattle in the breeze, and the horse's mane lifts softly beside the dog's neat white coat.
Jack Russell Terriers are small, energetic dogs bred to hunt foxes alongside horses and riders, so this pairing has a long history. They are bold, athletic and very smart, and they need lots of exercise and training to keep their busy minds out of trouble. A bored terrier can become a very creative digger.
Ponds are worth keeping an eye on. Banks can be slippery, algae can be harmful to pets that drink or swim, and standing water can attract wildlife. If you let a dog near a pond, keep them on a leash and rinse them off afterward. Horses should have a clean trough for drinking instead of pond water.
The terrier and the horse look out over the water with a shared sense of calm. Good friends can sit in silence and still feel perfectly understood. Some views are better shared.
