A Black Shepherd and a Horse Dozed Together by the Wood Stove
Snow may be falling outside, but in this cabin the fire is lit and two big friends are fast asleep. A black German Shepherd lies on a gray blanket on the wooden floor, one paw resting on the edge of the blanket, while a chestnut horse lies close beside him with its eyes closed and head low. The cast iron stove glows behind them, a stack of firewood waits to the side and a warm jacket hangs on the wall.
German Shepherds are alert, devoted dogs with a lot of intelligence, and they love to be near the people and animals they care about. They need daily exercise and mental work to stay happy, and their thick coat sheds heavily. A sleeping shepherd is often a relaxed one, which is a sign of a dog who feels safe.
Wood stoves are cozy but come with rules. The surface gets very hot, so a sturdy guard is important in a home with pets, and a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector are a must. Animals should never be left alone near an open fire. Horses, of course, belong in stables or paddocks in real life, but in this peaceful picture the two friends simply rest.
The fire pops softly, the dog breathes slowly and the horse sighs. It is a very quiet, very contented evening. A warm room and a good friend are plenty.
