A Saint Bernard and a Horse Met at the Window in the Golden Light
A big Saint Bernard has rested his heavy paws on an old wooden windowsill, and a chestnut horse leans in from outside to press its nose gently against his cheek. The sun is low and golden, the curtain waves in the breeze and the dog's calm, dark eyes look off into the glow. The weathered white paint of the sill is cracked, and the whole scene feels warm and well worn.
Saint Bernards are gentle giants with a big heart and a patient nature. Bred originally in the Swiss Alps as rescue dogs, they have a thick coat and a love of cold weather. They can drool quite a bit, shed heavily and overheat in the summer, so keep them cool and give them plenty of fresh water. They are happiest when they are close to their people.
Sunny windowsills are favorite pet perches, but they come with a few precautions. Make sure the window screen is strong and secure, and never leave a pet on a high sill without supervision. Strong afternoon sun can make a spot too warm, so keep fresh water nearby.
The horse and the dog share the last light of the day, and neither one wants it to end. Good friends know how to enjoy a view together. A window is a lovely meeting place.
