A Tortoiseshell Cat Kept Watch Over a Sleeping Bunny in the Basket
The lamp is low, the room is quiet and a wicker basket lined with knitted blankets holds two sleepers. A cream and tan lop-eared bunny is fast asleep with its nose tucked and its ears folded flat, and beside it a tortoiseshell cat rests her head against the rim, eyes closed, her dark mottled fur blending into the warm light. A chair, a plant and a gray sock toy sit on the floor nearby. The soft glow of the lamp lights the tips of the cat's whiskers, and the bunny twitches its nose once in a dream before settling again.
Tortoiseshell cats often have a reputation for being feisty, but many are also devoted and gentle with the animals they trust. The mix of black, orange and brown in their coat is unique to each cat, like a fingerprint. They typically like routine, a favorite resting spot and a bit of attention on their own terms.
A good sleeping place is important for every pet. A basket with soft blankets gives a feeling of security, and for rabbits a quiet spot away from drafts and noise helps them rest. Rabbits are prey animals, so they appreciate feeling safe, and cats and rabbits should only share a room when closely supervised.
The evening settles in and the room grows still. The tortie stays close, as if she knows that a good guardian never leaves her friend alone. Good night, little ones. Rest well.
