The Puppy Marched Ahead and the Pony Followed Every Step
The gravel path winds past flowerpots and garden beds, and a small brown and white Shih Tzu puppy marches along it with his head held high and his tail curled over his back. Close behind him, a shaggy brown pony walks with his head lowered, keeping the pup in sight. The late light turns the path gold, and a fence and a few tools sit along the edge.
Shih Tzus have a proud, bouncy walk, and their plumed tail is carried up and over the back. They are friendly dogs that like to be near their people, but they can also be quite independent when they are in front. They are small, so a harness and a gentle pace are a good fit for walks, and the flat face means they do best in mild weather. Your vet can offer tips on exercise.
It might seem odd for a big animal to follow a little one, but ponies are natural followers. In a herd they pay close attention to those around them and will often walk behind a trusted friend. A pony who follows a puppy is showing curiosity and comfort. Just keep in mind that the size difference is real, and the safest walks have people nearby to watch the feet.
The puppy marches on without a glance back, certain the pony will keep up. The pony does exactly that. Some friendships are built on one leading and the other simply trusting the path.
