Two Big Heads Peeked Over the Fence at the Chickens
A wooden fence runs along the edge of the yard, and two heads have popped up over it. A red and white Saint Bernard puppy rests his chin on the rail with a happy, open mouth, while a shaggy pony stands just behind him with a thoughtful look. Beyond the boards, a couple of hens pick their way across the dirt, and a coat and some boots hang near the door.
Saint Bernards were bred as rescue dogs in the Swiss Alps, and they carry that gentle, patient temperament today. Puppies are enormous and growing quickly, so they need space, steady training, and careful exercise to protect their joints. They also drool a good deal, so a towel nearby is a good idea. Your vet can give you advice on feeding a giant breed puppy.
Dogs and ponies both find chickens fascinating. Ponies often show curiosity in anything that moves in a funny way, and dogs may feel the pull of instinct. It is a good idea to keep the fence solid and to supervise whenever a dog is near poultry, because even a friendly dog can chase or frighten birds. Teaching a calm "leave it" early on helps in a household with many animals.
For now, the watching is peaceful. The hens go about their business, and the audience on the other side of the fence is perfectly content to look on.
