The Siamese Took the Fence Seat. The Puppy Took a Nap on It.
The garden is wrapped in soft morning mist, and two friends have claimed the best seat in the yard: the top rail of a weathered wooden fence. A seal point Siamese with bright blue eyes rests one dark paw on the board and gazes out with great seriousness. Beside her, a golden puppy has dropped his chin on the wood and fallen fast asleep, ears flopped forward, nose pressed to the rail. Beyond them a speckled hen and a rusty red one scratch around in the dirt, and a watering can and potted plants sit in the hazy background.
Siamese cats are known for being talkative, curious and strongly attached to their people, and many of them enjoy having a job, even if the job is just supervising the neighborhood. Watching birds and other animals from a safe spot is great mental exercise for a cat. If you have chickens and a dog or cat, it is wise to introduce them gradually and keep a sturdy fence between them, since a young puppy's curiosity can easily turn into chasing. Reward calm behavior from a distance, and talk to your vet or a trainer if the excitement gets too big.
For now the puppy, whom we might call Biscuit, is dreaming through the whole show while the cat takes notes. The hens do not seem to mind their audience at all, and the morning goes on at its own gentle pace.
