A Snowy Cat Shared Her Barn Corner With a Very Tired Puppy
Straw dust floats in a shaft of daylight while a fluffy white cat and a tan puppy settle into a quiet corner of the barn. The cat lies with her eyes half closed, cheek and shoulder pressed against the puppy, who is out cold with his chin tucked down and one velvety ear folded back. Bits of hay cling to their fur, a rough burlap sack is slumped in the corner, and weathered boards frame the scene. Outside the open doorway, a bright patch of green pasture waits, but neither of them is in any hurry to go there.
Barns are natural favorites for cats, and there is a good reason. Straw and hay are excellent insulators, and animals can burrow into them to hold in warmth. Cats are also drawn to enclosed, shadowy corners where they can see what is coming without being seen. If you keep animals around hay, remember that dry straw is a fire risk, so store it away from heaters and electrical cords, and keep a close eye on young puppies, who like to nibble on whatever they find. A clean blanket or pet bed can offer the same cozy feeling.
Friendships like this one seem to start with simple shared warmth. The puppy gets a soft pillow, the cat gets a snoring companion, and the barn gets a little extra peace.
