A Cat and a Puppy Come Face to Face on the Lawn for the First Time
Two noses are close enough to touch, but neither moves yet. A red tabby Exotic Shorthair lies flat on the grass with her paws tucked in, copper eyes wide and slightly wary, studying the creature in front of her. Facing her, a cream puppy with soft floppy ears and a dark nose lowers his head in a polite and curious bow, his gaze calm. In the background, a black rubber boot, a blue watering can and a crumpled cloth lie on the lawn, while sunlight filters over a small garden patch. It is the beginning of something, though neither of them knows what.
The first meeting between a cat and a dog is easiest when it is slow and calm. Let them see and smell each other without pressure, keep the puppy from rushing, and give the cat an escape route. Reward quiet, relaxed behavior with treats, and end the meeting while things are still going well. Exotic Shorthairs tend to be mellow and affectionate, which often helps. Every cat is an individual though, so if either animal seems frightened or tense, take a break and talk to your vet or a trainer for advice on the next steps.
A first hello might be a long stare, and that is perfectly fine. Good friendships rarely rush, and this one has all the time in the world to begin, one slow blink at a time.
