A Spotted Bengal Held Still While Ducklings Napped Along Her Side

Stretched out on a woolly rug, a spotted brown Bengal lies on her side with her head lowered and eyes half open. Along her flank, a row of fluffy yellow ducklings has climbed up to rest, eight or so of them lying in a line, their bills tucked and their wings relaxed. The cat's coat, a golden brown with dark rosettes, looks like a tiny leopard's, and her green eyes stay calm. Behind her, a basket of laundry, a grey sock, a toy mouse and a scatter of clutter show the busy room, and warm sunlight spills across the floor.

Bengals are active, athletic cats known for their wild-looking coats and high energy, so one lying still is a rare sight. They enjoy climbing, playing and exploring, and they tend to be smart and need lots of stimulation. Because of their strong hunting instincts, a Bengal should be supervised carefully near any small animals, including baby birds. Ducklings need a warm brooder, clean bedding and fresh water, and they should not be allowed to nap on a pet without a person watching. If you are unsure about mixing animals, your vet can help.

Even the busiest cat sometimes finds a reason to hold perfectly still. Today the reason is a row of sleepy ducklings, and she wears the job well.
