A Persian Cat and Six Ducklings Looked at Each Other for the First Time
On a patchy green lawn, a fluffy white Persian sits with her paws neatly tucked in, her copper eyes wide and her flat face wearing an expression of deep concentration. In front of her, six bright yellow ducklings have gathered into a small group, some turned toward her with curious bills, others facing away. Their downy fluff is the brightest thing in the yard. Behind them, a blue watering can, a wooden fence and a patch of scattered leaves mark the edges of a garden, and a few twigs and dry leaves dot the grass between the cat and her new little neighbors.
Persians are calm, quiet cats with long, thick coats and sweet, flat faces, and they usually prefer a peaceful, predictable home. A cat meeting new animals for the first time should be allowed to observe from a short distance and set the pace. Ducklings are far smaller and more fragile than puppies or kittens, so any meeting must be supervised, and the birds should be kept safe in a secure space when you are not watching. Fresh water, warmth and gentle handling are the basics of good duckling care, and your vet can help with details.
This first meeting is mostly about looking. Everyone has plenty to take in, and the Persian seems ready to see where it goes.
