A Calico Curled Around a Sleepy Pile of Ducklings in the Sun
In a patch of warm sunlight, a calico cat lies stretched on a woven rug with a heap of yellow ducklings cradled between her front paws. Her eyes are closed, her ears relaxed, and her white and orange face rests just above the little group. The ducklings are curled together in a soft pile, a few of them with their heads tucked down and a few peering out with sleepy eyes. Her big white paws, one with pink toe beans showing, wrap around them like a living cradle. The pale wall and soft blanket in the background keep the whole scene gentle and quiet.
Calico cats show a mix of white, orange and black fur, and like tortoiseshells, they are almost always female because of how the coat color genes work. They come in every personality, so the coat color does not tell you much about temperament. Baby ducklings need warmth, and they naturally huddle together when they sleep, but they should be kept in a proper brooder with a safe heat source. A cat can be very gentle with small animals, but it is always smart to supervise, and your vet can help you introduce pets to each other.
It is hard to imagine a cozier nap. The calico looks as if she could stay there all afternoon, and the ducklings will not be in any hurry to move.
